    I designed an iOS mobile application for Centerstone Research Institute (CRI). CRI is the largest Non for Profit behavioral health organization in the country.

    Our goal was to help people with SMI become self reliant and make independent decisions using assistive technologies.

APPROACH

To better understand Mental Illness, I engaged in research and discovery throughout the course of the project. I was fortunate to receive clinical and domain knowledge. The final design direction and solution was heavily influenced by the end user field trip and the expert interviews conducted.

DISCOVERY

“A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. ... mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.”

Expert Interview

I got an opportunity to interview Andy Matthews who is a behavioral health specialist and Assistant Manager for Community Support Services at a large nonprofit health organization in the Midwest. The interview provided insights for my study which highlight the life skill training programs running at the organization and some issues related with it.

EXISTING CARE SYSTEM
  • Setup short /long term goals with clients.
  • Depending upon the progress made, case workers assign frequent tasks to their clients.
  • Periodic review sessions are scheduled to discuss progress made.

KEY PAIN POINTS
  • The client lacks the motivation to engage in the training.
  • The client becomes too much reliant on the case worker.
  • Review sessions are recall based with no structure
  • Client’s progress is not monitored and tracked.
Contextual Inquiry

Next, I shadowed a case worker while she was working with a client. I accompanied them to a local grocery store. The case worker described typical client behavior. They spend a lot of time interacting with and taking care of clients. They act as guides to help clients learn interpersonal, social and employment skills. The key insights from the trip are :

GROCERY TRIP INSIGHTS
  • In the grocery store, the client had difficulty comparing same items from different brands.
  • Client found hard to locate items in the aisle and was guided by the case worker.
  • The client were not able to prioritize grocery items to stay under a limited budget.
  • The case worker also suggested new items, based on the client’s health and the product’s nutritional value.

Ideation

Affinity Diagrams
From the Qualitative research data, I used affinity diagram as a generative design methodology to brainstorm potential design directions and solutions. From there few design concepts were considered for further exploration.

I sketched low fidelity user interfaces for the selected concepts in dry erase notebook . Considering the insights gained from research and design opportunities to solve the issues, Grocery mobile app was chosen to be final design direction. 

Storyboard

For mapping out interaction scenarios and to decide the grocery mobile app features, I created storyboard using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and Intuos Pen and touch tablet.

Wireframes

I started working towards final design solution by making mid fidelity wireframes for both clients and staff using Affinity Designer tool.

Final Design

After creating the wireframes, I used UXPin a cloud based prototyping tool, to create final designs for the grocery shopping mobile application. Below are some screens for the key features of the application. This includes a) creating list, b) locating items, c) comparing similar items, d) chat with case worker and 1) recent activity, 2) editing profile, 3) app notifications on the case worker side.
